Major rating factors for travel insurance: countries visited. Why Israel or Egypt could be in Europe but Spain and Portugal not!

The major factor in travel insurance, especially for the over 75, is the country or region which is to be visited. Although traditionally travel insurance demarcates into four main regions, underwriting is now splitting these up over more and more areas- indeed one insurance company offers different rates for each country in Europe. Some notes follow:

  • UK : This covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. With recent changes, the Channel Islands and possibly the Isle of Man may no longer fall into this region. One or two insurance companies include Eire (Southern Ireland) in this region.
  • Europe : Europe does not just mean the European Union, nor just the continent of Europe (usually defined as being West of the Ural Mountains) but will also cover Mediterranean Islands (Rhodes, Cyprus, Crete, Majorca, Minorca, Ibitha etc) as well as the Canaries (Gran Canaria, Tenerife etc). However there are a couple of major differences between insurers.
    • Some insurers are rating some southern European countries (Spain, Turkey) higher. This is due to the fact that they are finding that travellers are being taken or recommended private medical facilities and as such the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is ineffective , increasing medical costs substantially. As the over 75 are much more likely to need treatment following the onset of medical conditions, this particularly affects them.
    • On the other hand, some insurers include African countries with a Mediterranean coastline (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Egypt) and possibly those in the Middle east (Israel, Lebanon, Syria) as 'Europe'. It may seem surprising that travel insurance to the Red Sea resorts of Egypt (Sharm-El-Sheik) costs as little as a trip to Paris, but this may be the case. (Note that the political situation in North Africa and the Middle East is fluid - travellers should check on the situation before deciding to go as there may be limited cover or difficulty in repatriation/ obtaining treatment depending on the situation) - this will particularly affect the over 75 as they are more prone to requiring medical treatment and even when fully fit are less likely to be able to take care of themselves in difficult situations.
  • Worldwide Excluding USA. This definition also usually extends to excluding trips over to  Canada, The Caribbean Islands and, possibly, Mexico. The usual caveats apply - read the FCO website about the political, criminal and terrorist situation before booking and check before travelling. Travel insurance will not normally cover travellers going against FCO advice. Since insurance premiums depend on the intended destination, the fact that the policyholder may end up over in the USA by diversion or the need to obtain treatment is irrelevant.
  • Worldwide: Just as it states on the can. No restrictions on destinations - other than the one alluded to of travelling against FCO advice.
